Real Data. Real Change.

“Sustainability” is a slippery word. Too often it’s used as a tagline. We’ve used real research to implement what we feel is the most genuine approach to building a sustainable business.

sustainability at every step

Any business that wants to call itself sustainable first has to answer a simple question: what does sustainability actually mean?

For us, sustainability is simple: we want to move towards a world where our business takes less from the environment than it gives back.

Of course, this is easier said than done — and a lot of companies get it wrong. Many companies pursue admirable goals, like net-zero carbon emissions, without ever consider the feasibility of those goals.

The reality is, given today’s technology and market conditions, most companies simply cannot operate at a net-zero capacity and continue to exist. Instead of shooting for an impossible goal, we asked ourselves: what can we do today that will lead to a better future tomorrow?

To answer this question, we’ve implemented the research of Giving Green, an organization that researches the most effective ways for companies to exist in a way that is more environmentally sustainable.

In their 2023 white paper, they highlight that businesses should shift away from traditional modes of environmentalism, like net zero goals, and instead focus on investing on real initiatives, like political change and technological improvements. By doing this, we’re making sure sustainability isn’t just a tagline; it’s at the core of everything we do.

Our Approach to Sustainability

Research says that not all actions are equal. There are four evidence-backed ways that companies can implement corporate environmental policy

Engage in Policy

Government action means wide-spread change. Policy is often the most effective way to make a real difference.

Support Technological Innovation

Investment is needed to move us towards a greener future, whether that's manufacturing techniques or carbon capture.

Contribute to a Climate Action Fund

Companies like Giving Green have created funds to funnel money towards the most effective policy and research goals.

Improve Conventional Offsetting

If companies are going to invest in carbon offsets, they should make sure to find the most affordable, effective options.

Not all offsets are created equal. Some are ineffective and leak their carbon back into the atmosphere, while others are so expensive that they’re simply not feasible.

To find one that’s both effective and affordable, we’ve partnered with Tradewater, the most effective carbon offsetting company in the world. Tradewater tracks down refrigerants, halocarbons, and other gasses that are used in heavy industry (such as mining for oil) and destroys them before they ever enter the atmosphere.

These gasses —  some of which can be up to 10,000 times more effective than carbon at trapping heat in the atmosphere — currently contribute to 50% of global warming. By specifically targeting these at their source and preventing them from ever being released, Tradewater can match the impact of large carbon offsetting projects for a fraction of the cost.

Is it a perfect solution? No. More is needed to move towards a truly sustainable future. For the time being, though, Tradewater is the most effective per-dollar way of preventing further global warming.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

With all of this in mind, what do we actually do to make our business sustainable? We take three real-world, measurable steps:

Buy the right products

We limit our inventory and only buy products from manufacturers who use sustainable methods, such as organic/recycled materials, energy-efficient production methods, or both.

Give with every purchase

For every product sold, the equivalent of 10 kilograms of carbon is removed from the environment.

Donate to real change

We partner with companies like CPAWS, Opportunity Green, Y2Y, and the Giving Green climate action fund to drive initiatives that will lead to a better tomorrow.
